Novellas rock!

Hey all!

Since the next installment in my Fabulous Four series is still in editing, I started writing some other stuff. Despite the delays, I am already well into writing the fourth and final book of the Fabulous Four series...boy, is it steamy!! But I am stalled on it right now for a few reasons, the main one being that I'm not 100% sure about how I want their conflict to proceed, so I am taking a break.

In the meantime, I have been writing some short stories, or more better stated, some novellas. The first one I wrote was inspired in part by the movie "The Holiday" starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black, which I recently re-watched. While my story is inspired by the general concept of the movie story, it is definitely an original work of my own creation, taking its own completely unique path. I enjoyed writing it, doing so in just one week!

What I liked about writing it most was that it was quick: writing a novella allows me to get right to the main story rather than focus on developing a major plot with secondary and tertiary characters, etc. The first one, tentatively entitled "Homecoming" is just shy of 20,000 words.

Last week while on vacation in magical Disney World, I had a dream, which inspired the next novella. I am already almost 10,000 words in and loving it! Funnily, it is called "The Apartment", so based on the names of these two novellas, I am thinking of putting them together into one volume, possibly alone or with other short stories (if I write any in that same theme) calling the volume "Home, Sweet Home". What do you think?

Here is a synopsis of the first two stories, although I am not yet done with the second one. I bet I will be by this weekend, though, if I keep this pace up!

Homecoming:

Laurie Evans just broke up with her boyfriend and is seeking a change of scenery, so she packs up her meager belongings and rents rooms in a county manor house in Hampshire, England, home of literary greats such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. A free-lance editor and aspiring writer herself, Laurie is determined to finish her first novel and start over someplace new.

Jamie Anderson is the caretaker of Stanmore Manor. He is handsome and enigmatic, immediately capturing Laurie's fancy despite the fact that she has sworn off men for the foreseeable future. The attraction between the two of them is undeniable and soon they find themselves involved in a torrid love affair. But can Laurie open herself up to potential heartache again if Jamie doesn't open himself to her?

The Apartment:

English teacher Tara Reynolds finally has the ideal job and just found the perfect place to live: a beautiful Victorian house in Westfield, New Jersey living with two other women with whom she works...or so she thinks. On moving day, Sheri Landsman, the art teacher who originally placed the ad for roommates, does a disappearing act, leaving Tara to settle in on her own. Imagine her surprise when the other roommate shows up...and he is a man!

Keith Jacobs is incredibly sweet and attractive, and soon sparks begin to fly as Tara falls for him at the same time that sexy Sheri is determined to bed him. She knows she should keep things platonic because if they hook up and things don't go well, living together could get awkward, but Tara is having a hard time keeping her growing feelings at bay. What will happen as the tension mounts and Keith is forced to choose between Tara and Sheri?
